Getting Ready for a Playoff
Part of our mental game programs. Build a program with it
A playoff can sneak up on you. Be ready. First, learn the format. Your club's playoff may not work like the ones on TV. Find out which holes you'll play, so you can plan if it goes past one hole. Know where your opponents stand, too. If they're in trouble, you may not need to be aggressive. And if you miss the green, take your time. Look at your lie carefully before choosing a shot.
Step by step
- Check the playoff format.
- Learn which holes you'll play.
- Plan each hole ahead.
- Watch your opponents' positions.
- Adjust how aggressive you are.
Why it works
A playoff gives you less time to react, so decisions you make early are the ones that hold up under pressure. Knowing the format and the holes lets you plan each shot before nerves build. Watching your opponents tells you how much risk the situation actually needs, which keeps you from forcing shots you don't have to hit.
Common mistakes
- You assume the playoff works like the ones on TV.Ask the committee or check the rules sheet for the format before you leave the last green.
- You only think about the first playoff hole.Learn the full list of playoff holes and have a rough plan for each one in case it goes long.
- You play at full aggression without checking where your opponents are.Look at their positions first, and play safer if they are in trouble.
How you'll know it's working
- You can name the playoff holes and their order without checking a card.
- You pick a target and a club for each hole before you step up to the ball.
- After a miss, you study your lie for a few seconds before you choose a shot.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Write the playoff holes and a one-line plan for each on your scorecard while you walk to the first tee.
Harder: Practice it in a friendly match by playing a sudden-death hole after the round, with a plan set in advance and a shot chosen only after you read your lie.
Common questions
How does a golf playoff work at a club event?
It varies by club. Some use sudden death on set holes, and others replay the hole or use a scorecard playoff, so check the format with the committee before it starts.
Should I play aggressively in a golf playoff?
Not always. If your opponents are in trouble, a safe shot to the middle of the green can be enough, and you only need to take risks when the situation calls for it.
