Think About Ball Flight, Not Your Swing

Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure. Build a program with it

On a nervous first tee, swing thoughts can get in the way. Try picturing the ball's flight instead. See where it starts, how high it goes and where it lands. If you want a feel, use your body. Turn back and turn through. That keeps your hands quiet. Nerves are normal. It's just adrenaline. And in your warm-up, lay down alignment sticks so you're always aimed correctly.

Step by step

  1. Picture ball flight instead of mechanics.
  2. Feel your body turn back and through.
  3. Keep your hands quiet.
  4. Accept nerves as normal.
  5. Warm up with alignment sticks.

Why it works

When you think about swing parts, you slow the motion down and tighten up. A picture of the ball's start line, height and landing spot gives your body one clear target, so it can move in a free, connected way. A body turn back and through also keeps your hands from taking over, which helps the clubface stay steady.

Common mistakes

  • You still run a list of mechanical thoughts while you try to picture the shot.Drop the list and pick one flight: the start line, the height and the landing spot.
  • You picture the ball flight only after you step into your stance.Picture it from behind the ball, then step in and keep that image as you set up.
  • You use your hands to steer the ball toward the picture.Turn back and turn through with your body and let your hands stay quiet.

How you'll know it's working

  • The ball starts on the line you pictured, even if it curves a little.
  • You make solid contact more often, with fewer thin and heavy strikes.
  • Your swing feels smooth, and your grip and forearms stay relaxed through impact.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice at the range with alignment sticks laid down and hit easy half swings while you picture one simple, straight shot.

Harder: Pick a different shot shape and landing spot for each ball, picture it, and hit it with no practice swing and no swing thoughts.

Common questions

How do I stop overthinking my swing on the first tee?

Replace swing thoughts with a picture of the ball's start line, height and landing spot. Then turn back and through and let the swing happen.

Are first tee nerves normal in golf?

Yes. Nerves are adrenaline, and almost every golfer feels them. Accept them, take a slow breath and focus on your shot picture.
