Under Pressure, Commit or Step Away
Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure, no routine, focus for 18 holes. Build a program with it
Under pressure, doubt is your enemy. Picture the whole shot before you take a club. A fuzzy picture means you back off and start over. Once you've decided, make one practice swing. Then step in and copy it. Skip the extra waggles and late thoughts. And focus only on what you control. Not the other players. Just your ball and your stroke.
Step by step
- Picture the shot before choosing a club.
- Not clear? Step back.
- One practice swing.
- Step in and repeat it.
- Control only what you can.
Why it works
Pressure raises muscle tension and floods your head with competing thoughts. A clear picture of the shot gives your body one target and one plan, so the swing has less to fight. One practice swing sets the feel you want, and copying it keeps you from adding new ideas over the ball. Stepping away when the picture is fuzzy stops you from swinging with doubt.
Common mistakes
- You choose the club first and picture the shot afterward.Picture the start line, flight and landing spot first, then pick the club that fits that picture.
- You swing anyway when the picture is unclear.Step back, walk away from the ball, and rebuild the picture before you take a club again.
- You add extra waggles and last-second swing thoughts after the practice swing.Take one practice swing, step in once, and start the swing within a few seconds without adding a new thought.
How you'll know it's working
- You can describe the shot in one sentence before you pull a club, including start line and landing spot.
- Your routine takes about the same time on every shot, with no extra waggles or restarts once you are over the ball.
- Your contact and ball flight stay steady on important shots instead of getting tight or hurried.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Practice the routine on the range or in a casual round with no score on the line, using the same steps for every shot.
Harder: Add a small stake, such as a point game or a target score, and still follow every step without rushing or skipping the step-back.
Common questions
How do I stop overthinking over the ball?
Do your thinking before you step in. Picture the shot, take one practice swing, then step in and copy it without adding new thoughts.
Is it okay to back off a shot in the middle of my routine?
Yes. If the picture is fuzzy or you feel doubt, step back and start over. A fresh start is better than swinging while unsure.
