Picture the Shot Before You Hit It
Part of our mental game programs for focus for 18 holes. Build a program with it
Seeing the shot before you swing gives your body a clear goal. Not everyone sees vivid pictures. That's fine. If you can't picture a ball flight, feel the swing instead. Or just lock onto a very small target. The mistake is standing over the ball thinking about your swing. A clear picture or feel usually leads to a freer swing.
Step by step
- Pick a small target from behind.
- Picture the flight, or feel the swing.
- Close your eyes briefly if it helps.
- Step in while it's fresh.
- Swing within a few seconds.
Why it works
Your body moves better toward a clear outcome than toward a list of positions. A picture, a feel, or a small target gives your brain one goal, so it does not need to manage many swing thoughts. Swinging soon after you form that goal keeps it fresh and leaves less time for doubt.
Common mistakes
- You pick a broad target such as the whole fairway.Choose one small spot, such as a single tree, a bunker edge, or a patch of the green.
- You form the picture, then wait too long and start thinking about your swing.Step in right after the picture or feel is set and swing within a few seconds.
- You force a vivid mental image and get frustrated when you can't see one.Switch to feeling the swing you want, or just stare at the small target and let your body respond.
How you'll know it's working
- The ball starts on or close to the line you picked more often.
- Your pre-shot routine takes about the same time on every shot.
- You feel free and unhurried over the ball, with fewer swing thoughts.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Practice it on a short, easy shot such as a wedge to a large green before using it with a driver.
Harder: Use it on every shot in a practice round, and change targets and shot shapes so you must picture a new flight each time.
Common questions
What if I can't visualize a golf shot?
Many golfers can't see a clear picture, and that's fine. Feel the swing you want to make, or lock onto a very small target and swing at it.
How long should I take to picture a shot?
Only a few seconds. Pick the target from behind the ball, form the picture or feel, step in, and swing while it is still fresh.
