Own Your Routine and Your Self-Talk

Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure, no routine. Build a program with it

Pressure isn't bad. What matters is how you handle it. A routine helps most. Even top players feel pressure. They're just prepared for it. Build a routine that fits you, not one copied from someone else. Use it on every shot, not just the big ones. Then watch how you talk to yourself. When things go badly, it's easy to turn negative. Catch it and swap in something helpful.

Step by step

  1. Build a routine that fits you.
  2. Use it on every shot.
  3. Notice negative talk.
  4. Replace it with something helpful.
  5. Prepare for pressure.

Why it works

A routine gives your mind a fixed set of tasks before each swing. That leaves less room for worry about the result. Doing it the same way on every shot makes it automatic, so it still works when you feel tense. Helpful self-talk keeps one bad shot from affecting the next one.

Common mistakes

  • You copy a routine from someone else and it feels forced.Keep only the parts that feel natural to you, such as a practice swing and one deep breath, and drop the rest.
  • You only use your routine on important shots.Use the same routine on every shot, including practice shots, so it is familiar when pressure rises.
  • You let negative talk run after a bad shot and carry it to the next one.Notice the thought, then replace it with a short, useful phrase such as 'Smooth tempo' or 'Pick the target'.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your routine takes about the same time on every shot.
  • You can name your last negative thought and what you replaced it with.
  • Your swing feels as steady on a tense shot as on an easy one.'

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Start with a routine of just two steps, such as one practice swing and one look at the target, and use it only on the range.

Harder: Use your full routine and your replacement phrases while playing a scoring game, such as keeping score on a hole where each bad shot counts against you.

Common questions

How long should a golf pre-shot routine be?

It should be short enough that you can repeat it the same way every time. Most golfers do well with a few clear steps, such as picking a target, taking a practice swing, and starting the swing.

How do I stop negative self-talk on the golf course?

Notice the thought as soon as it appears, without arguing with it. Then replace it with a short, specific phrase about what you want to do on the next shot.
