Stop Thinking Swing and Start Playing Shots

Part of our mental game programs for focus for 18 holes. Build a program with it

Many golfers practice well, then bring a head full of swing thoughts to the course. That pulls your focus off the target. Building a swing and playing a shot are two different jobs. Save the technique work for practice. On the course, picture the shot first. Where does it start? How high does it fly? How does it curve, and where does it land? Then feel it once and trust it. Let the swing happen. Don't try to help the ball.

Step by step

  1. Leave technique for practice.
  2. Choose the target and the shot.
  3. Picture start, height, curve and landing.
  4. Feel the shot.
  5. Commit and let it go.

Why it works

Your brain controls movement best when its attention is on the outcome, not on body parts. A clear picture of the shot gives your body one task: to produce that ball flight. Swing thoughts split your attention and make you steer the club, which breaks the rhythm you built in practice.

Common mistakes

  • You carry a swing thought from the range to the first tee and check it during the swing.Finish your technique work before you leave the range and take only a target and a shot to the course.
  • You picture only the target and not how the ball flies there.Name the start line, height, curve and landing spot before every shot so the picture is specific.
  • You picture the shot, then stand over the ball and start doubting it or adjusting.Make one feel swing or one rehearsal, then step in and hit without adding new thoughts.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your routine takes about the same time on every shot and you stop adjusting over the ball.
  • The ball starts on the line you pictured more often, even when the curve or height is a little off.
  • Your swing feels freer and your tempo stays steady after a poor shot.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice it on a par 3 or in a practice round where the score does not count, and choose only a start line and a landing spot.

Harder: Play a full round where you name the start, height, curve and landing on every full shot, and allow no swing thoughts at all.

Common questions

How do I stop thinking about my swing on the golf course?

Give your mind a different job before each shot: pick the target, picture the ball flight and feel one smooth swing. Do your technique work on the range, not on the course.

Should I use swing thoughts when I play?

Keep them for practice, where changing your technique is the goal. On the course, your focus belongs on the shot you want to hit.
