Make Your Routine Automatic Before You Compete

Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure, no routine. Build a program with it

Under pressure, too many thoughts hurt. That's why your routine has to be set before you compete. If you're still working on it, it isn't a routine yet. Make every decision behind the ball, so your mind is calm about the plan. Know where you'll stand. Maybe take a calming breath. Use the same way of aiming every time. Then walk in and set up the same way. Keep it steady, repeatable and on time.

Step by step

  1. Make decisions behind the ball.
  2. Take a calming breath.
  3. Aim the same way every time.
  4. Set up and waggle the same way.
  5. Practice until it's automatic.

Why it works

Under pressure, your attention narrows and extra thoughts crowd out feel. A fixed routine moves every decision to one place, behind the ball, so your mind is quiet when you swing. When the same steps happen in the same order and at the same pace, they run without effort, and your body repeats the motion it has practiced.

Common mistakes

  • You keep changing the routine on the course.Settle the steps in practice and do not change them during a round or event.
  • You make club or target decisions while standing over the ball.Finish the plan behind the ball, then walk in only when you are committed.
  • Your routine speeds up or slows down depending on the shot.Use the same steps and the same pace on every shot, including easy ones.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your routine takes about the same time on every shot.
  • Your first practice swing and setup look the same from shot to shot.
  • Your start line matches your target more often because your aim is consistent.]

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice the routine on the range with no target pressure, using only one club and one target until the steps feel natural.

Harder: Run the full routine on every shot during practice rounds and add a small consequence, such as a score to beat, so you rehearse it under mild pressure.

Common questions

What should a pre-shot routine include?

It should include a decision behind the ball, a calming breath, a consistent way to aim, and a repeatable setup and waggle. Keep it short enough that you can do it the same way every time.

How long does it take to make a pre-shot routine automatic?

It depends on how often you practice it. Use it on every shot in practice, not just on the course, and it will become automatic sooner.
