Enjoy Yourself Under Pressure

Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure, no routine. Build a program with it

Having fun and playing well go together. First, make enjoying your playing partners part of your goal. Learn something about each one. Give a real compliment. Second, find what you like about hard conditions. Calling them awful creates tension. Before you start, list three challenges and why they're interesting. Third, build a letting-go moment into your routine. Once the rehearsal swing is done, breathe once and say a single word, like "free." Then hit it.

Step by step

  1. Enjoy your playing partners.
  2. Learn something and give a compliment.
  3. List three fun challenges.
  4. Breathe once after the rehearsal.
  5. Say a release word and go.

Why it works

Tension builds when you treat a round as a threat. That tightens your grip, shortens your breathing and speeds up your swing. Focusing on people, interesting challenges and a set release moment gives your attention a job other than worrying about the result. A calm body and a clear routine make it easier to repeat your normal swing.

Common mistakes

  • You force small talk and it feels fake, so you stay tense.Ask one honest question and pay a compliment you actually mean.
  • You list challenges but still describe them as bad, such as 'this wind is a pain'.Write each challenge with a reason it is interesting, such as 'the wind makes me judge distance by feel'.
  • You breathe and say the word, then stand over the ball and think about swing mechanics.Finish your swing thoughts during the rehearsal, then breathe, say the word and hit without adding any new thought.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your pace from rehearsal swing to strike stays the same on easy shots and tough ones.
  • Your grip pressure and shoulders feel loose at address, even on a shot that matters.
  • Your contact stays steady late in the round, and your swing does not get quicker after a bad hole.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice the breath and release word on the range, hitting ten shots with no score or target pressure.

Harder: Use the full routine in a practice game with a small stake, such as a match against a friend, and keep it on every shot.

Common questions

How do I stop being nervous on the first tee?

Shift your attention to your playing partners and ask them something about themselves. Then use one breath and your release word after the rehearsal swing so your routine is the same as on any other shot.

Does having fun really help you play better golf?

It can, because a relaxed mind usually means looser grip pressure and a smoother tempo. Tension tends to do the opposite, so enjoying the round supports a repeatable swing.
