Switch Your Focus On and Off
Part of our mental game programs for focus for 18 holes. Build a program with it
Nobody can focus hard for four or five hours. So don't try. Turn your focus on for each shot and off between shots. As you get to your ball, narrow your attention to the shot. Go through your normal steps. Hit the shot and react to the target. Then relax. Walk and think about something else. This saves energy for the shots that matter, especially late in the round.
Step by step
- Narrow your focus as you reach the ball.
- Run your normal steps.
- Hit and react to the target.
- Relax as you walk.
- Repeat every shot.
Why it works
Sustained concentration uses mental energy, and a round lasts several hours. Most of that time contains no swings. If you focus only in the short window around each shot, you keep that energy for the swings where decisions and execution matter. A clear on and off pattern also gives your routine a fixed start and finish, so each shot begins fresh.
Common mistakes
- You stay locked in on the round between shots and tire out late.Pick a clear spot, such as when you put the club back in the bag, and relax your attention there.
- You start focusing too early and think about the shot while walking and talking.Wait until you reach the ball, then narrow your attention and begin your normal steps.
- You keep thinking about the result after the ball lands, good or bad.React to the target, take one breath, and shift your attention to the walk, the scenery or a simple conversation.
How you'll know it's working
- You feel about as sharp on the last few holes as you did on the first few.
- Your pre-shot routine takes about the same time and feels the same on every shot.
- You can name a clear moment on each shot where your focus switched on and a moment where it switched off.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Practice the on and off pattern on the range or in a casual round by picking one clear cue, like stepping up to the ball, to start your focus.
Harder: Use the full pattern in a competitive round or a match, where you have to relax between shots even after a bad result or while others are talking.
Common questions
How do you stay focused for a whole round of golf?
You don't focus the whole time. Focus on each shot for the short time it takes to prepare and hit, then relax between shots so you have energy left late in the round.
What should I think about between golf shots?
Think about anything unrelated to your swing, such as the course, the weather or a conversation with your group. The aim is to let your mind rest until you reach the next ball.
