A 15-Second Reset After a Bad Swing

Part of our mental game programs for nerves and pressure, losing it after bad shots, focus for 18 holes. Build a program with it

One poor swing rarely costs much. A chain of three does. Build a quick reset. Name the mistake in one word. Something light, like "oops." Take one slow breath as you walk. Choose where the next one goes before any swing thought. Then hit your normal shot, not a hero shot. Also know your pattern. Write down your usual miss off the tee. Choose targets that give that miss room.

Step by step

  1. Name the mistake in one word.
  2. Take one slow breath.
  3. Pick the next target first.
  4. Hit your normal shot.
  5. Aim where your usual miss has room.

Why it works

A bad swing costs one stroke, but the reaction to it often costs more. Anger or a rushed fix pushes you into a forced swing or a risky shot. A short, fixed routine gives your body time to settle and moves your attention from the last swing to the next target. Choosing the target before any swing thought keeps the decision about where the ball goes, not how to fix the swing.

Common mistakes

  • You use a long, harsh label for the mistake, which keeps you stuck on it.Use one light word like "oops" and move on.
  • You try to make up the lost stroke with a hero shot.Play your normal shot to the safest sensible target and accept the result.
  • You start a swing thought before you pick a target.Pick the target first, then take one simple swing thought if you need one.

How you'll know it's working

  • You can finish the reset in about 15 seconds without rushing your next setup.
  • You rarely hit two or three poor shots in a row.
  • Your misses end up in places that leave you an easy next shot.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice the reset on the range after each poor shot, where the result does not count.

Harder: Use the reset on the course after every poor shot for a full round and note how often a second poor shot follows.

Common questions

How do I stop one bad shot from ruining my round?

Use a short reset: name the mistake in one word, take one slow breath, and pick your next target. Then play your normal shot instead of trying to recover everything at once.

How do I find my usual miss off the tee?

Write down where your tee shots finish over several rounds, left or right and short or long. Then aim so that side has room, such as away from the trouble.
