Punch, Knockdown or Stinger?

Part of our irons programs for topped or thin. Build a program with it

There are three main low shots. Each has a different job. The punch gets you out from under a branch. Ball back, short swing, and you accept some spin. The knockdown is for wind. You want less spin, so swing at less than full effort. A hard swing adds spin and the ball climbs. The stinger is a long, low power shot off the tee, often with a slight draw for extra run. Ask yourself two things. Do you need spin? Is it a power shot or a touch shot?

Step by step

  1. Under a branch: ball back, short swing.
  2. Into wind: extra club, easy swing.
  3. Long and low: try a stinger with a slight draw.
  4. Decide if you need spin.
  5. Practice each on a calm day.

Why it works

A low shot comes from less dynamic loft at impact and less spin. Moving the ball back and shortening the swing delofts the club and cuts the time the face spends on the ball, so the ball starts lower. An easier swing with an extra club makes less spin than a hard swing, so the ball does not climb in wind. A stinger keeps loft low and the swing fast, so the ball runs after landing, and a slight draw adds more run.

Common mistakes

  • You try to lift the ball by scooping with your hands on a punch.Keep your hands ahead of the ball through impact and let the club's loft do the work.
  • You swing hard with an extra club into the wind for a knockdown.Take one more club and swing at less than full effort, because a hard swing adds spin and the ball climbs.
  • You hit a stinger with a big hook or a thin strike because you force the swing.Aim for a slight draw only, keep your tempo smooth, and finish low with the club out in front of you.

How you'll know it's working

  • The ball starts below the height of the branch or tree line you picked and stays low through its flight.
  • On knockdowns, the ball flies lower and does not balloon when the wind pushes against it.
  • You see a shallow divot just after the ball, and the strike feels solid rather than thin.some

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice each shot on a calm day with a mid-iron and pick a clear target before you add trees or wind.

Harder: Hit each shot in turn on the course or range, change the shot every ball, and name the job it must do before you swing.

Common questions

What is the difference between a punch shot and a knockdown?

A punch is for getting under an obstacle, with the ball back and a short swing. A knockdown is for wind, with an extra club and an easy swing to keep spin down.

Why does the ball balloon when I swing hard into the wind?

A hard swing adds spin, and more spin makes the ball climb. Take more club and swing easier to keep the flight lower.
