How to Hit a Hybrid
Part of our irons programs for topped or thin, fat or chunked, weak contact. Build a program with it
The hybrid is very forgiving. But many golfers swing it like a fairway wood or a long iron. Treat it like an iron. Play the ball slightly ahead of center. Stand a little closer than with a wood. Make a smooth swing with a shallow, slightly downward strike. Let the club brush the turf after the ball. Trust the loft to launch it. It's a great swap for long irons.
Step by step
- Ball an inch or two ahead of center.
- Stand a little closer than with a wood.
- Swing smoothly and slightly down.
- Brush the turf after the ball.
- Finish fully.
Why it works
A hybrid has a low, deep center of gravity and a rounded sole that glides through turf. This lets the club launch the ball high without help from you. A ball slightly ahead of center and a shallow, slightly downward strike puts the low point just after the ball, so you get clean contact instead of a sweep off the tee or a steep dig.
Common mistakes
- You play the ball too far forward, as if it were a fairway wood.Move it back to an inch or two ahead of center so the club reaches the ball before it reaches the low point.
- You try to lift or scoop the ball into the air.Keep your chest over the ball through impact and let the loft do the work.
- You swing hard to make up for the long shaft, which causes fat or thin contact.Swing at a smooth, steady pace and hold your balance until the finish.
How you'll know it's working
- The club brushes a shallow strip of turf just after where the ball was.
- The ball starts on your target line and climbs on its own without a scooped feel.
- You finish balanced, with your chest facing the target and your weight on your front foot.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Hit the ball from a tee pushed down so only a sliver shows, or from a clean fairway lie, and swing at about half speed.
Harder: Hit from light rough or a slight slope, or pick a specific target and aim to land the ball within a set distance of it.
Common questions
Where should the ball be in my stance with a hybrid?
Play it an inch or two ahead of center. That spot lets you strike slightly down and brush the turf after the ball.
Should I swing a hybrid like a fairway wood or an iron?
Swing it like an iron. Use a smooth, slightly downward strike instead of a flat sweep, and trust the loft to launch the ball.
