Three Dumbbell Moves for a Stronger Swing
Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, swing speed and strength, back or age. Build a program with it
A pair of dumbbells is enough to build swing power. First, jump squats. Hold the weights at your sides, squat down, then jump up hard. Second, one-arm rows. Brace one hand and knee on a bench. Pull the weight toward your chest, elbow close to your side. That works your back. Third, an overhead press for steady shoulders. Do 3 sets of 8 to 10 of each.
The drill
- Jump squats with dumbbells.
- Land softly.
- One-arm rows from a bench.
- Overhead press.
- 3 sets of 8 to 10 each.
Why it works
The swing starts from the ground. Jump squats train your legs to push into the ground fast, and that force moves up through your hips into the club. Rows build the back muscles that control your arms and keep the club on plane. The overhead press builds shoulder strength so your arms stay steady as speed increases.
Common mistakes
- You use weights so heavy that the last reps get sloppy.Pick a weight you can lift for all 8 to 10 reps with the same form on the last rep as the first.
- You land stiff-legged after a jump squat.Land on the balls of your feet and bend your knees and hips to absorb the force.
- You twist your body or swing the weight to finish a row.Keep your back flat and your torso still, and pull the elbow close to your side.
How you'll know it's working
- Your last rep of each set looks the same as your first.
- Your landings on the jump squats are quiet and balanced.
- Your shoulders feel steady and your swing feels more controlled through impact.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use light weights or do bodyweight squats without the jump, and keep each set to 8 reps.
Harder: Use a heavier pair of dumbbells, or add a fourth set, as long as your form stays clean and you do not feel pain.
Common questions
How often should I do dumbbell exercises for golf?
Two or three times a week works for most golfers, with a rest day between sessions. Stop if anything hurts.
Can dumbbell training really add swing speed?
Stronger legs, back and shoulders give you more force to use in the swing. Pair the work with regular practice so you can control the extra power.
