Use a Box to Feel Pushing Off the Ground
Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, tight or stiff, swing speed and strength. Build a program with it
Pushing up from the ground adds power without swaying. A step or box helps you feel it. Put your trail foot on the box. Cross your arms on your chest and bend into golf posture. Push through your heel and straighten that leg. Don't turn yet. Do a few. Then push first and turn your chest after. That's the order your swing uses, ground first. Repeat with your lead foot on the box for the downswing.
The drill
- Trail foot on the box, golf posture.
- Push through the heel to straighten.
- Then push first and turn after.
- Switch to the lead foot.
- Eight reps of each, each side.
Why it works
Pushing down into the ground makes the ground push back up through your legs. That force lets you gain power by extending the leg instead of shifting your hips sideways. Raising one foot on a box isolates each leg, so you feel the push before any turn begins. Practicing push first and turn after builds the order your swing uses.
Common mistakes
- You push with the toes or the ball of the foot and lose the heel.Keep pressure in the heel and mid-foot as you straighten the leg.
- You slide your hips sideways instead of pushing up.Think of straightening the leg, not moving the hips toward the target or away from it.
- You stand up out of your posture as the leg straightens.Keep your spine angle and crossed arms steady so only the leg changes length.
How you'll know it's working
- You feel pressure in the heel of the boxed foot, and your hips rise without drifting sideways.
- Your head stays about in place while the leg straightens.
- In the full swing, you strike the ball more solidly and your weight stays centered at the top of the backswing.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use a lower step and do the push without any turn until the heel pressure feels clear.
Harder: Add the chest turn after the push, then make slow practice swings keeping that same order.
Common questions
Why does pushing off the ground add power in a golf swing?
The ground pushes back against the force your legs apply. That lets you add speed by extending your legs and turning, instead of swaying or arming the club.
What can I use if I don't have a box?
Any sturdy, stable step or low platform works. Make sure it won't slip, and stop if anything hurts.
