Kettlebell Moves for Swing Power
Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, tight or stiff, swing speed and strength. Build a program with it
Kettlebells are cheap and great for power, balance and stability. Start with a light twist and punch. Turn and punch the bell out to work your core and hips. Go for 30 seconds, rest 30. Next, kettlebell swings. Hinge at your hips, let the bell swing between your legs, then drive it forward with your hips. Finally, single-leg deadlifts. Stand on one leg and hinge, lowering the bell toward the floor. Do four rounds of each.
The drill
- Twist and punch, 30 on, 30 off.
- Swings, driving from the hips.
- Single-leg deadlifts for balance.
- Four rounds each.
- Keep the weight modest and form clean.
Why it works
The golf swing is powered by the hips and trunk turning against a stable base. Twist and punch trains the core and hips to rotate while you control a load. Swings teach you to hinge and then drive forward with the hips, which is the same pattern that moves your body toward the target in the downswing. Single-leg deadlifts build balance and hip stability so you stay centered as the club speeds up.
Common mistakes
- Lifting the bell with your arms during swings.Let the arms hang loose and start the movement by driving your hips forward.
- Rounding your back when you hinge.Push your hips back, keep your chest tall and spine long, and lower only as far as you can hold that position.
- Using a bell that is too heavy, so form breaks down.Drop to a lighter bell and keep every rep clean, as the steps say.
How you'll know it's working
- Your swings come from a hip drive, and your arms stay relaxed.
- You can hold the single-leg deadlift without wobbling or touching your free foot down.
- Your hips and core feel worked, not your lower back or shoulders.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use a very light bell, or no weight at all, and do fewer rounds until the movements feel smooth.
Harder: Use a slightly heavier bell while keeping form clean, or slow the single-leg deadlift down and pause at the bottom.
Common questions
Do kettlebell swings help your golf swing?
They train the hip hinge and hip drive that you use in the downswing. They also build strength in your glutes and core, which supports a stable, powerful turn.
How heavy should a kettlebell be for golf training?
Choose a weight that lets you keep clean form on every rep. If your back rounds or your arms take over, the bell is too heavy.
