Stay Hydrated and Play Better Late

Even a little dehydration hurts your choices and your shots. Not just how you feel. Start your round already hydrated. Sip water every few holes. Don't chug a whole bottle at once. On hot days, sports drinks with electrolytes help, in moderation. Sugary sodas and energy drinks can make your energy jump and crash. Alcohol hurts your coordination and dries you out. Make water a daily habit, not just a golf day thing.

Step by step

  1. Start the round hydrated.
  2. Sip every few holes.
  3. Use electrolyte drinks in moderation.
  4. Limit sugar and alcohol.
  5. Drink water every day.

Why it works

Your body needs enough water to keep blood volume, focus, and muscle control steady. When you are low on fluid, you think less clearly and your timing and feel get worse. That shows up as poor club choices and loose contact, often late in the round. Steady sipping keeps those systems working through all 18 holes.

Common mistakes

  • You wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking.Drink water before you tee off and take a few sips every few holes, whether you feel thirsty or not.
  • You drink a whole bottle at once when you finally think of it.Take small, regular sips so your body can use the water and your stomach stays comfortable.
  • You rely on soda, energy drinks, or beer to get through the round.Keep water as your main drink, use an electrolyte drink in moderation on hot days, and save alcohol for after the round.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your focus and club choices on the back nine feel as sharp as on the front nine.
  • Your swing tempo and contact stay steady late in the round instead of getting loose.
  • You do not get a headache or a sudden energy crash after a few holes.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Fill a bottle before you leave home and set a reminder to take a few sips at every second or third tee.

Harder: Track what you drink for a full week, including non-golf days, so your water habit holds up before and after every round.

Common questions

How much water should I drink during a round of golf?

There is no single number that fits everyone. Start the round hydrated, sip every few holes, and drink a bit more when it is hot or you are sweating heavily.

Are sports drinks good for golf?

They can help on hot days because they replace electrolytes lost in sweat. Use them in moderation, since many contain sugar, and keep water as your main drink.
