Build Speed Without Wrecking Your Swing

Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, swing speed and strength. Build a program with it

Swinging as hard as you can and forgetting technique is the wrong way to add speed. Golf rewards efficient, repeatable swings. Older golfers should put safety first. Younger golfers should avoid building bad habits. Start by owning your swing positions. Use a light band and hold key spots against its pull. Then add resistance to specific motions, like pulling a band down toward impact from the top. Progress slowly.

Step by step

  1. Keep your technique.
  2. Use light bands to hold key positions.
  3. Hold them against resistance.
  4. Add band pulldowns toward impact.
  5. Progress slowly.

Why it works

Speed only helps if the club still arrives square and on the right path. Holding key positions against a light band teaches your muscles to produce force in the positions you actually swing through. Adding resistance to one motion at a time, such as pulling down from the top toward impact, builds strength without changing the pattern you already own.

Common mistakes

  • You use a band that is too heavy and your posture breaks down.Switch to a lighter band so you can hold each position with your spine angle and balance unchanged.
  • You rush through the holds and the pulldowns.Move slowly into each position, pause there, and return under control.
  • You add resistance before you can reach the positions without it.Rehearse the positions with no band first, and add the band only when they feel repeatable.

How you'll know it's working

  • You can hold each position against the band without your posture or balance shifting.
  • Your contact stays as centered on the face as it was before the session, even when the swing feels faster.
  • Your start line and ball flight stay the same as speed goes up.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use the lightest band, shorten the holds, and practice the positions without a club until they feel repeatable.

Harder: Use a slightly stronger band or longer holds, and add the pulldown toward impact while keeping the same positions and tempo.

Common questions

How often should I do band speed work?

Two or three short sessions a week is enough for most golfers, with rest days between them. Stop if anything hurts.

Will swinging harder add distance?

Only if you still strike the ball well. A harder swing that costs you center contact or a square face usually gives up distance and accuracy.
