Get Swing Speed Back After 50

Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, tight or stiff, swing speed and strength. Build a program with it

After 50, muscle and flexibility drop. That costs you speed. You can get some back. First, find what's holding you back. Stiff hips? An old shoulder injury? A physical check helps. Then work on mobility in your hips, upper back and shoulders. Once you move better, add strength training. Do it safely and build slowly. Finally, work on your swing so you can use your new range and strength. Jumping straight to heavy lifting skips the base.

Step by step

  1. Find your limits.
  2. Work on mobility first.
  3. Add strength once you move better.
  4. Build up safely.
  5. Train your swing to use it.

Why it works

Swing speed comes from turning your body through a full range and moving force from the ground up through the hips, trunk and arms. If your hips, upper back or shoulders are stiff, you cannot turn far or fast, so you lose speed. Mobility gives you the range, strength lets you produce force through that range, and swing practice teaches you to use both.

Common mistakes

  • You skip the check and train what you assume is weak.Test your hip turn, upper back rotation and shoulder reach first, and train the one that limits you most.
  • You jump straight to heavy lifting before you move well.Spend your first sessions on mobility, and add load only when the movements feel free and controlled.
  • You add strength work but never swing with the new range.Finish each session with easy swings that use the longer turn, then build up to full speed gradually.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your backswing turn gets longer without you forcing it or leaning to make up the difference.
  • Your finish is more balanced, and you can hold it facing the target.
  • Your drives carry a little farther with the same effort and solid contact.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use only two or three mobility moves, such as a hip turn and an upper back rotation, and repeat them daily before adding any strength work.

Harder: Once your mobility is steady, add light resisted rotation and leg strength work, then finish with fast swings at a controlled pace.

Common questions

Can you really increase swing speed after 50?

Many golfers can get some speed back by improving mobility and strength, since both tend to decline with age. Results vary, and you should build up slowly.

Should you stretch or lift weights first to gain swing speed?

Start with mobility so you can move through a full range. Add strength once you move better, because lifting on top of stiff joints builds on a weak base.
