Train to Move Fast, Not Just Get Big
Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, tight or stiff, swing speed and strength. Build a program with it
More muscle doesn't always mean more clubhead speed. Training to move fast does. Build your week around that. On lower-body days, use lunges, squats and deadlifts. Keep the weight modest and move it quickly. Power starts from the ground. Train your upper body on a different day. Mix in easy recovery days to let your muscles bounce back. Keep your mobility and control as you get stronger.
Step by step
- Mix hard days and easy days.
- Lower body: lunges, squats, deadlifts.
- Lighter weight, moved fast.
- Upper body on another day.
- Keep your mobility.
Why it works
Clubhead speed comes from how quickly you can produce force, not only from how much force your muscles can make in total. Lifting a modest load fast trains your body to apply force in the short time the downswing allows. The swing starts with force against the ground, so lunges, squats and deadlifts train the same chain of movement you use to hit the ball.
Common mistakes
- You load the bar so heavy that every rep moves slowly.Drop the weight until you can move it fast and with control on every rep.
- You train legs and upper body hard on the same day, so you are tired for the next session.Put upper body work on a different day and keep at least one easy day between hard days.
- You build strength but stop doing mobility work, so your turn gets shorter.Keep a few minutes of hip and upper back mobility in every session and check that your turn is not shrinking.
How you'll know it's working
- Each rep moves with speed from start to finish, and the last rep is as quick as the first.
- You feel fresh enough on easy days to swing or move well, not sore and stiff.
- Your turn looks and feels as full as before, and your contact stays solid when you swing harder.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use body weight only for lunges and squats, and focus on pushing up through the ground quickly.
Harder: Add a little weight while keeping the same fast rep speed, and stop the set as soon as the speed drops.
Common questions
Does lifting heavy weights make you hit the golf ball farther?
Not always. More muscle helps only if you can use it quickly in the swing, so training to move fast matters as much as getting bigger.
Why train legs for golf clubhead speed?
Power in the swing starts from the ground and travels up through your legs and hips. Lunges, squats and deadlifts build that base.
