Four Daily Mobility Moves for Golf

Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for tight or stiff, back or age. Build a program with it

Golfers need mobility in three places most. The upper back, the hips and the shoulders. When you can't turn, your swing makes up for it. You sway, lift or use your arms too much. That leads to poor contact. A few minutes each day builds range over time. Lie on your side and rotate open. Switch your hips in a seated 90-90. Arch and round your spine. Finish with shoulder work. If anything hurts, see a professional.

The drill

  1. Side-lying upper back openers, ten per side.
  2. 90-90 hip switches, ten per side.
  3. Arch and round your spine for a minute.
  4. Shoulder circles or band pulls.
  5. Repeat daily.

Why it works

The golf swing needs the upper back to rotate, the hips to turn in both directions and the shoulders to move freely. If one of these is stiff, another part moves too much to make up for it. That is when you sway, lift your chest or push the club with your arms. Moving each area through its range every day makes a fuller turn easier, so your body does not need to compensate.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing through the reps so the stretch never reaches the target area.Move slowly and pause briefly at the end of each rep so you feel the upper back, hip or shoulder working.
  • Letting your lower back or knees move during the side-lying rotation so the upper back does little.Keep your knees stacked and pressed down, and turn only your chest and top arm.
  • Forcing the end range or pushing through pain.Work to a firm stretch only, and stop if it hurts and see a professional.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your backswing turn feels fuller, and your chest points further from the target without your hips swaying.
  • The rotation or hip switch on your stiffer side looks closer to the other side over a few weeks.
  • Your contact is more consistent because you lift up and use your arms less.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use a smaller range, fewer reps, and support your top arm or hands on the floor until the moves feel comfortable.

Harder: Slow each rep down, hold the end position for a few breaths, and add a light band in the shoulder work.

Common questions

How often should golfers do mobility exercises?

Daily is best, because small amounts of regular work build range better than an occasional long session. Fifteen minutes is enough for this routine.

Can I do these mobility moves before a round?

Yes, they work as part of a warm-up if you keep the effort gentle and move smoothly. Do the full set on other days to keep building range.
