Cable Exercises for Swing Speed
Part of our fitness & warm-up programs for not enough distance, swing speed and strength, back or age. Build a program with it
Cable machines let you train in golf-like motions. Try a chop. Start with the cable high, like the top of your backswing. Pull it down toward impact with both hands. For the throwing part of the downswing, use your trail arm alone. Push the cable forward and down, working your chest and the back of your arm. Train both directions so you stay balanced. Keep reps low and the motion quick. Add weight slowly over time, with rest days between sessions.
The drill
- High-to-low chops toward impact.
- Trail-arm push exercise.
- Train both directions.
- Low reps, fast motion.
- Add weight slowly and rest between sessions.
Why it works
Swing speed comes from moving force through the ground, trunk and arms in a fast sequence. A cable gives steady resistance through a golf-like path, so the muscles that rotate your trunk and drive your trail arm learn to produce force in that direction. Low reps with a fast motion train speed of movement rather than endurance, and training both directions keeps the two sides of your body balanced.
Common mistakes
- Using a weight so heavy that the motion slows down.Lower the weight until you can move the cable quickly and keep your posture through every rep.
- Pulling with your arms only and keeping your hips and trunk still.Let your trunk rotate through the chop so the arms follow the turn.
- Training only your natural swing direction.Repeat the same sets in the opposite direction so both sides get equal work.
How you'll know it's working
- Each rep moves fast from start to finish, and you can repeat the speed on the last rep of a set.
- Your balance stays steady, with no stumbling or leaning at the end of the chop or push.
- You feel the work in your trunk, chest and the back of your trail arm, not only in your shoulders.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use a light weight and slow the motion down until the path and posture feel the same on every rep.
Harder: Add weight in small steps while keeping the motion quick, or add a split stance to challenge your balance.
Common questions
How often should I do cable exercises for golf swing speed?
Train with them a few times a week at most, with rest days between sessions. Add weight slowly and stop if it hurts.
Why train both directions with cable chops?
Golf swings load one side of your body more than the other. Working both directions keeps your muscles balanced and your movement even.
