9-hole course handicap

9-hole course handicap = (handicap index ÷ 2) × (9-hole slope ÷ 113) + (9-hole course rating − par for those 9)

Most 18-hole courses publish separate ratings for the front and back nine; they're on the scorecard or the posting screen. A 9-hole course has its own 9-hole rating.

How 9-hole rounds count toward your handicap

Since 2024, a 9-hole score turns into an 18-hole differential right away. Your 9 holes get a differential as normal, then the system adds the differential you'd be expected to make on the other 9, based on your index:

Expected 9-hole differential = (handicap index × 0.52) + 1.197

So for a 16.0 index, the expected 9 is 16.0 × 0.52 + 1.197 = 9.5. If your 9 holes come out at 8.0, your 18-hole differential is 17.5.

You need an index for this. Before you have one, 9-hole scores are paired up to make 18-hole scores.

Do 9-hole rounds hurt your handicap?

No. The expected part is based on your current index, so a 9-hole round moves your handicap a bit less than an 18-hole round would. A great 9 will still bring it down.

Can I get a handicap from 9-hole rounds?

Yes. Any mix of 9- and 18-hole rounds adding up to 54 holes gets you an index.

How do I calculate a 9-hole handicap?

Use half your index: (index ÷ 2) × (9-hole slope ÷ 113) + (9-hole rating − par).
