How to choose a golf ball

Three things decide which ball suits you, in this order:

  1. Your swing speed. It decides how much compression you need. Slower swings (under 85 mph) get more distance from low-compression balls. Faster swings (over 105 mph) need firmer balls that don't over-spin. See every ball's compression.
  2. Cover: urethane or ionomer. Urethane is soft and grabs the grooves, so chips and wedges spin and stop. Ionomer (often called Surlyn) is tougher, cheaper and spins less, which keeps drives straighter.
  3. Price. Losing three balls a round? A value ball makes sense. If you rarely lose one and your short game is solid, a tour ball pays off.

Common questions

What golf ball should I use?

Match the ball to your swing speed first: low compression under 85 mph, mid from 85 to 105, high above 105. Then pick a urethane cover if you want greenside spin, or ionomer if you want distance and a lower price.

Does the golf ball really make a difference?

For most golfers it’s worth a few yards and a little more control around the greens. It matters more for better players. A ball that matches your swing speed helps at every level.

What is golf ball compression?

How much the ball squeezes at impact, on a scale of roughly 30 to 110. Lower compression is softer and suits slower swings; higher is firmer and suits faster swings.

Are expensive golf balls worth it?

If you hit greens and your short game is consistent, yes: urethane tour balls spin more on short shots. If you lose several balls a round, a value or mid-price ball is the better choice.
