What Spin Loft Means for Your Wedges

Part of our short game programs. Build a program with it

Spin isn't luck. A lot of it comes from spin loft. That's the gap between the direction the club is moving and the loft on the face at impact. Change either one and your spin changes. So your setup and the way you deliver the club both matter. On the range, try small setup changes. Watch how the ball checks after each one. Keep what gives you the stopping power you want.

Step by step

  1. Learn the idea: club direction versus face loft.
  2. Notice how your strike changes spin.
  3. Try small setup changes.
  4. Watch how the ball checks.
  5. Keep what works.

Why it works

Spin loft is the difference between the loft on the face at impact and the angle the club is travelling on, called attack angle. A larger gap makes the face grip the ball more and brushes it up the face, which adds backspin. A smaller gap gives less spin and a lower, running shot. Setup changes such as ball position and shaft lean change both numbers, so they change spin.

Common mistakes

  • You think more loft always means more spin.Remember that spin comes from the gap between face loft and club direction, so a steeper strike with the same loft also changes spin.
  • You change several things at once, such as ball position, grip pressure and stance width.Change one setup item per set of shots so you know which one caused the change in check.
  • You judge spin by how the ball looks in the air instead of where it lands and stops.Pick a landing spot and watch how far the ball releases or checks after it lands.

How you'll know it's working

  • You strike the ball first and then the turf, with a divot that starts at or just past the ball.
  • Shots with the same club and swing land in a tighter group and stop a similar distance after landing.
  • When you make a setup change, the ball checks more or less in a way you can repeat on the next few shots.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use one wedge, hit short shots of the same length, and change only your ball position by a small amount between sets.

Harder: Hit the same target with different trajectories and landing spots, and adjust your setup so the ball stops in the same place each time.

Common questions

What is spin loft in golf?

It is the difference between the loft on the clubface at impact and the direction the club is moving. A larger gap usually means more backspin.

How do I get more spin on my wedges?

Strike the ball cleanly with the face before the turf, and keep the face clean and dry. Small setup changes can raise or lower the spin loft, so test them one at a time.
