Using the Whole Teeing Area

Part of our rules programs. Build a program with it

The teeing area goes from the front of the tee markers back two club-lengths. Under Rule 6.2b, your ball is inside if any part touches or hangs over that area. You can stand outside it to hit a ball that's inside. So use the whole space to find a flat spot or a better angle. Teeing ahead of the markers in stroke play costs two strokes, and you have to replay from inside. Don't just tee up in the same spot every time.

Step by step

  1. Find the line between the markers.
  2. Measure back up to two club-lengths.
  3. Pick a flat spot with a good angle.
  4. Never tee ahead of the markers.
  5. Stand wherever is comfortable.

Why it works

The teeing area is a rectangle, and the ground inside it is not all the same. Teeing on a flat spot gives you a level stance, so your swing and contact stay more consistent. Moving across the area also changes the angle to the fairway, so you can aim away from trouble such as a hazard on one side.

Common mistakes

  • You tee up in the same spot on every hole out of habit.Look at the whole area before you tee up, and choose the flattest spot with the best angle for that hole.
  • You tee the ball slightly ahead of the markers line.Sight along the front edge of the two markers and keep every part of the ball behind that line.
  • You guess the depth and tee the ball more than two club-lengths back.Measure back from the front line with a club, and use the longest club in your bag if you want the full depth.

How you'll know it's working

  • Your feet feel level at address, with no strong tilt toward or away from the ball.
  • You can say before each swing where the ball is in the area and why you picked that spot.
  • The ball starts on your intended line more often because the angle matches your target.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice on a flat range mat or a quiet first tee, and use one club to mark the front line and the two-club depth.

Harder: On each hole, choose your tee spot based on where the trouble is, then explain to yourself how the angle helps before you hit.

Common questions

How far back can you tee up from the tee markers?

You can tee up anywhere within two club-lengths behind the front line between the markers. The ball must sit inside that area, and it counts if any part touches or hangs over it.

Can you stand outside the teeing area to hit the ball?

Yes. Only the ball has to be inside the teeing area, so your feet can be outside it. This lets you use the full space for a better angle or a flatter stance.
