Can You Use a Rangefinder?

Part of our rules programs. Build a program with it

Under Rule 4.3, you can use equipment during your round, as long as it doesn't do the work of a key skill or judgment for you. Getting distance or direction information is allowed. So a rangefinder or GPS is fine. Measuring changes in elevation isn't. Turn the slope function off. You also can't use equipment in an odd way to make a stroke. Committees can change this with a Local Rule, so check the event terms.

Step by step

  1. Distance devices are allowed.
  2. Turn off slope or elevation.
  3. Don't use gear in an odd way to make a stroke.
  4. Check the Local Rules.
  5. When unsure, ask first.

Why it works

Rule 4.3 separates information from judgment. Distance and direction tell you where things are, but you still choose the club and the shot. Slope or elevation readings go further because they do the adjusting for you, so they replace a skill you are expected to use yourself. Committees can change this by Local Rule, which is why the event terms matter.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the slope function switched on during a round.Turn slope off before you start, or use a device or mode with no slope reading.
  • Assuming the rule is the same in every event.Read the Local Rules and event terms before you play, because a committee can change what is allowed.
  • Using a device or club in an odd way to help make a stroke, such as as an aid for your swing or alignment.Use the device only to get distance or direction information, then put it away before you set up to the ball.

How you'll know it's working

  • Before the round, you can confirm the slope function is off and the device only shows distance.
  • You have read the Local Rules or event terms and know whether distance devices are allowed.
  • You use the device only to learn yardage, then choose your club and shot yourself.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use a distance-only device, or a GPS app that gives yardages without slope, so there is nothing to switch off.

Harder: Practice judging yardage by eye first, then check it with the device to test your own estimate.

Common questions

Can you use a rangefinder in a round of golf?

Yes. Under Rule 4.3, you can use a rangefinder or GPS to get distance information, unless a Local Rule says otherwise.

Can you use the slope function on a rangefinder?

No, not under the standard rule. Measuring changes in elevation is not allowed, so turn the slope function off unless a Local Rule permits it.
