The 14-Club Limit
Part of our rules programs. Build a program with it
Rule 4.1b allows 14 clubs in your bag. It's easy to go over by accident. A wedge you were trying. A spare putter. A friend's club that slipped into your bag. If you find an extra club during the round, take it out of play right away. The penalty applies to each hole where you broke the rule, up to a limit. The fix is easy. Count your clubs on the first tee. It takes 30 seconds.
Step by step
- Count your clubs before every round.
- Take out test clubs and spare putters.
- Check for a friend's club.
- Found an extra? Take it out of play now.
- Tell your marker.
Why it works
The limit exists so every player picks from the same number of clubs. Extra clubs are almost always put there by habit or by accident, not on purpose. A count at the first tee catches the mistake before any hole is played, which is the only point where it costs you nothing.
Common mistakes
- You count only when you remember to, and skip it on rounds that feel casual.Make the count part of your routine on the first tee for every round, casual or not.
- You leave a test wedge or spare putter in the bag after a practice session.Take test clubs and spares out at the car or the range and keep them out of the bag until you decide to carry them.
- You find an extra club mid-round and quietly leave it in the bag.Take it out of play right away, set it aside, and tell your marker so the rules are followed.
How you'll know it's working
- You reach 14 or fewer every time you count on the first tee.
- You know the name and purpose of every club in the bag.
- You can say what you did with any extra club the moment you found it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Keep a short written list of your clubs in the bag pocket and tick it off as you count.
Harder: Count by touch without looking, then name each club and its job as you go, so you also notice duplicates or gaps.
