Grip Down Instead of Swinging Easy

Part of our irons programs for weak contact, uneven lies. Build a program with it

Need a shorter shot with the same iron? Don't slow down. Grip down. Slowing your swing is when contact and control fall apart. Gripping down lets you keep a full, committed swing. As a rough guide, an inch down might take off about five yards. Going farther down takes off more. Your numbers will be different, so test them on the range.

Step by step

  1. Know your normal carry for each iron.
  2. Grip down an inch and hit a few.
  3. Note the distance you lose.
  4. Try two inches and note it again.
  5. On the course, grip down instead of easing off.

Why it works

Gripping down shortens the club, which lowers the speed at the clubhead for the same body rotation. You keep your normal tempo and rhythm, so the strike stays reliable. A shorter club is also easier to control, which helps you find the center of the face. Slowing down on purpose often makes you decelerate through impact, and that costs contact and direction.

Common mistakes

  • You grip down but still swing easy to be safe.Commit to your normal tempo, since the shorter grip already takes distance off.
  • You change your stance and ball position without noticing when you grip down.Set up as usual, and let the club sit a little closer to you without moving the ball.
  • You guess the yardage loss on the course instead of testing it.Hit a few shots at one inch and two inches on the range and write down your carry for each.

How you'll know it's working

  • Contact stays centered on the face, with the same strike pattern as your full grip.
  • Your divot starts at the same spot after the ball and looks about the same depth.
  • The ball starts on your target line and the carry is consistently shorter by a repeatable amount.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Start with a mid-iron and grip down only one inch, so you can see the distance change without changing much else.

Harder: Pick a target distance between two clubs, choose how far to grip down, and hit to that number without a practice swing.

Common questions

How much distance do you lose by gripping down an inch?

As a rough guide, about five yards, but it varies by player and club. Test it on the range to get your own number.

Is it better to grip down or swing easier?

Gripping down is usually better because you keep a full, committed swing. Swinging easier often causes you to slow down through the ball and hurts contact and control.
