When to Hit 3-Wood Off the Tee, and How
Part of our driving programs for not enough distance, topped or thin. Build a program with it
The best club off the tee is the one you trust. On a tight hole, or when your driver is wild, a 3-wood or hybrid can be the smart call. Set up a little differently than you would with driver. Move the ball back a bit, to just inside your lead heel. Tee it lower, so only a small part of the ball sits above the clubhead. Then make a controlled swing, about 85 to 90 percent. Think tempo and balance, not power. In play beats long.
Step by step
- Pick the club you trust most for tight holes.
- Play the ball just inside your lead heel.
- Tee it low.
- Swing at 85 to 90 percent.
- Finish balanced.
Why it works
A 3-wood has a shorter shaft and more loft than a driver, so it gives you better control of the clubface and a lower spin-to-speed ratio of mistakes. Playing the ball just inside your lead heel and teeing it low lets you meet the ball at the bottom of the arc or slightly on the way up, which gives clean contact. A swing at 85 to 90 percent keeps your balance and tempo, so the face is more likely to be square at impact and the ball ends up in play.
Common mistakes
- Teeing the ball too high, so you hit it off the top of the clubface.Tee it so only a small part of the ball sits above the clubhead.
- Swinging hard to make up for the shorter club.Hold your swing to about 85 to 90 percent and focus on smooth tempo.
- Placing the ball too far back or too far forward in your stance.Set the ball just inside your lead heel and check it before every swing.
How you'll know it's working
- The ball starts on your target line and stays in the fairway more often than with your driver.
- You strike the ball in the middle of the face, with no thin or toe-side contacts.
- You finish balanced and can hold your finish until the ball lands.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use a hybrid instead of a 3-wood, because it is shorter and has more loft, so it is easier to hit solidly.
Harder: Pick a narrow fairway target and hit ten tee shots in a row, counting how many finish in the fairway.
Common questions
When should I hit a 3-wood instead of a driver off the tee?
Use it when the fairway is tight, when trouble sits close to the driver landing area, or when your driver is not working that day. The goal is to keep the ball in play.
How high should I tee the ball with a 3-wood?
Tee it low, so only a small part of the ball sits above the clubhead. This helps you make clean contact and avoid popping the ball up.
