Bump It Along With a 7-Iron

Part of our chipping programs for distance control. Build a program with it

A 7-iron chip barely flies. It lands quickly and rolls. So you can play it a lot like a putt. That's great if wedge contact gives you trouble. The stroke is small and forgiving. Grip down near the bottom of the grip. Stand closer with the shaft more upright. Use your putting stroke. Land it just on the green. Learn how far it rolls compared to how far it flies.

Step by step

  1. Grip down near the bottom.
  2. Stand closer, shaft upright.
  3. Use your putting stroke.
  4. Land it just on the green.
  5. Learn your carry and roll.

Why it works

A 7-iron has low loft, so the ball leaves the face low and runs out instead of flying high. Gripping down and standing closer lets the shaft sit more upright, so the sole glides and the stroke works like a putt, with little wrist action. A small, simple stroke gives more consistent contact than a wedge swing that needs the right amount of speed and loft.

Common mistakes

  • You hit down hard because the club feels like a chip, and the ball shoots past the hole.Keep the putting stroke: smooth, small, and with the same tempo back and through.
  • You hinge your wrists and flick the clubhead at the ball.Keep your wrists quiet and move the club by turning your shoulders, as you do on a putt.
  • You aim to land the ball near the hole, so it runs well past.Pick a landing spot just onto the green and let the ball roll the rest of the way.

How you'll know it's working

  • The ball comes off low, takes one or two small hops, and then rolls along the ground.
  • You make clean contact from the middle of the face, with no thin skips or heavy dig into the turf.
  • Your shots finish a similar distance from the hole when you repeat the same stroke length.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Chip from a short, tight lie on the fringe or a closely mown area with plenty of green to roll across.

Harder: Chip over longer grass or toward a pin with less green, and pick a landing spot that makes the ball stop close to the hole.

Common questions

When should I chip with a 7-iron instead of a wedge?

Use it when you have a clear path along the ground and plenty of green between you and the hole. It is a good choice if wedge contact is inconsistent for you.

How far will a 7-iron chip roll?

It rolls much farther than it flies, but the exact ratio depends on the green speed and slope. Hit several chips to the same spot and watch how far they roll, so you learn the carry and roll for your own stroke.
