The Closed-Face Option for a Plugged Lie

Part of our bunkers programs for fat or chunked, not getting out, plugged or odd lies. Build a program with it

Most plugged-lie advice says open the face. There's another way that works well in some sand. Close the clubface instead. Aim a little right to allow for it. Swing a bit across your body, out to in. Then hit down hard right behind the ball. The front edge chops into the sand and the ball pops out. Keep your speed up the whole way. Slowing down leaves it in the bunker. Try both methods in practice. Keep the one that works in your sand.

Step by step

  1. Close the clubface at address.
  2. Aim slightly right.
  3. Swing out to in.
  4. Chop down right behind the ball.
  5. Keep your speed up.

Why it works

A closed face turns the leading edge into a digging edge. It cuts down through the sand instead of sliding under the ball on the bounce. Hitting down steeply right behind the ball drives the sand and ball up and out. An out-to-in path suits the steep chop. The closed face also sends the ball left, so you aim a little right to allow for it.

Common mistakes

  • You close the face but still aim at the flag, so the ball comes out left.Set up aiming slightly right of the target, for a right-hander, before you close the face.
  • You hit the sand too far behind the ball, so the club stops short of it.Pick a spot right behind the ball and chop down into that spot.
  • You slow the club down as it enters the sand.Commit to the swing and keep your speed up through impact.

How you'll know it's working

  • The club enters the sand right behind the ball and leaves a short, deep mark.
  • The ball pops out of the bunker on every try, even if it lands in different spots.
  • The ball starts left of your aim line by a consistent amount, so you can adjust your aim.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Practice on a ball that is only half buried in soft sand so you can learn the steep chop before you try a fully plugged lie.

Harder: Bury the ball deeper or add a lip in front of you, and try to land the ball within a set area on the green.

Common questions

Should I open or close the clubface from a plugged lie?

Many golfers open it, but a closed face can work better in some sand because the leading edge digs in. Try both in practice and keep the one that works in your sand.

Why does the ball come out left with a closed face from a bunker?

A closed face points left of where your body is aimed, so the ball starts left. Aim a little right at address to allow for it.
