About Williams Golf & Country Club
Williams Golf & Country Club sits on roughly 150 acres of hillside land above the Ohio River in Weirton, West Virginia. The property was purchased by Weirton Steel, whose president, John C. Williams, envisioned both a civic center and a golf course on the site at the outset of the Great Depression. Emil "Dutch" Loeffler and John McGlynn were engaged to design a nine-hole layout, which was later expanded to 18 holes and named for its founder.

The course is tied to the early history of the region's steel industry. Williams became a business associate of Ernest T. Weir in 1905, and their work helped transform a small rural community in Hancock County into the industrial complex around which the town of Weirton grew.
Construction of a large stone clubhouse began in 1932, positioned at the edge of the golf course with views over the Ohio River. The clubhouse and lodge were built from sandstone barged in from Isabella, Pennsylvania, then hoisted up the steep hillside. The clubhouse includes a Grand Ballroom.
