Spring Valley Golf Course plays as two contrasting nines, each with its own character and demands. Rather than a short-iron course, the layout calls for a full range of clubs.
The front nine sits atop a moraine left behind by glaciers, and level ground is scarce. Undulating fairways and greens are the rule here, and with few trees to block it, wind is a near-constant factor on most shots.
The back nine is the tougher of the two, cut through a dense pine forest. Fairways are narrow and separated, so holes feel isolated from one another, and all but one of the par fours measures over 400 yards. Instead of straight-away corridors, most holes bend right or left, and some do both, leaving little room for errant tee shots.
