About Oshkosh Country Club
Oshkosh Country Club traces its origins to 1899, when it operated as the Algoma Country Club on the site of what is now Lakeshore Golf Course. In 1917 the club relocated south of Oshkosh, near Ripple Avenue and Highway 45, and took its present name.
Its first president was Phil Sawyer, a well-known local businessman. During the 1920s and 1930s the course attracted a number of golf's leading figures, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen. The club was one of the nine founding members of the Wisconsin State Golf Association, formed to create a state amateur championship, and was also involved in the era that produced the Northeastern Wisconsin Golf Association for interclub competition.

Sawyer later moved to Augusta, Georgia, and was succeeded by Irwin Stewart MacNichol, an immigrant who had learned the game from the professionals at Carnoustie, Scotland — a link reflected in the clubhouse remodel completed in 2019.
