Vitense Golfland is a family-owned golf complex in Madison, founded in 1955 by George Vitense, a PGA professional and tournament player. Vitense had been connected to Madison golf since 1918, when at age 14 he became assistant professional at Maple Bluff Country Club, and he later spent 20 years as head professional at Nakoma Golf Club. In 1970, at age 66, he became the first Wisconsin professional to compete in The Open Championship, and he was inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
When the business opened on Schroeder Road, the location sat well outside Madison's developed area. Vitense was an early figure in off-course golf, building a covered tee area and a two-level driving range at a time when both were uncommon in the United States. He also opened Wisconsin's first lighted golf course, which remains the only course in the state playable at night under lights.
The founder died in 1988 and his wife Naomi in 1990, after which their three daughters ran the business. Grandson Joel Weitz returned to Madison in 1992 to help manage it and, with his wife Sarah, acquired it in 2001.
