About Chequamegon Bay Golf Club
Chequamegon Bay Golf Club traces its origins to 1925, when a group of Ashland residents organized the construction of the Chequamegon Country Club. Nine holes and a log-cabin style clubhouse were built on a 60-acre parcel of former farmland, and play began that same summer. The course was laid out by Sandy Campbell, a Scotsman who also served as the club's first golf professional, greenskeeper and manager. In keeping with his background, he shaped a Scottish links-style course with rolling hills and neighboring fairways. Anticipating future expansion, the club bought an adjoining 40-acre parcel at the southwest corner of the property in 1930.

In 1944 the Ashland Elks Lodge acquired the property and the club was renamed the Elks Country Club. The club's signature tournament, The Shortstop, began in 1945 and has been held every year since, drawing close to 200 golfers on the second weekend of July.
