Broadmoor Golf Club

Broadmoor Golf Club traces its origins to the 1920s, when the Puget Mill Company set aside 115 acres for golf and a further 85 acres for a residential park beside Lake Washington, creating what became the region's first country club development. At the time, cable cars ran down Madison Street toward the lake, opening the area to the city.

The project was conceived by timber executives in the years following World War I and the influenza pandemic, among them William H. Talbot and William Andrew Irwin of the Pope & Talbot Lumber Company. Their aim was a Seattle neighborhood where residence and recreation sat together in a natural setting. Irwin surveyed comparable developments across the United States and Canada before the plan went ahead. The course was known briefly as the Union Bay Golf Course and then the Puget Golf and Villa Club before taking the name Broadmoor, borrowed from the Colorado resort.
