Woodchuck Golf

Woodchuck Golf in Waitsfield grew out of a casual idea between friends: pitching a shot over a pond onto a knoll. A walk around the property turned up six playable holes, and the course took shape from there.

In its first season the layout was marked by nothing more than six cedar posts, with the greens cut by setting a lawn mower as low as it would go. Bunkers were added later, placed deliberately in the spots where one regular player tended to land his shots. The first two greens proved too steep to hold a ball even at fairway height and were reshaped.
