Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club

Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club sits on ground that was once farmland held by several families, a stretch of Virginia Beach shoreline overlooking Linkhorn Bay, whose waters historically supplied local fish and shellfish. Roughly thirty acres ran from the end of Bobolink south to the inlet and north to the present clubhouse site, with the rest of the Point belonging to the Miller family.

An agreement with the owners of the Cavalier Hotel, built in 1927, allowed the course to serve the recreational needs of hotel guests. After the death of Mr. Crane in 1938 in a duck hunting accident on the James River, the hotel purchased the golf course from his estate, and it became known thereafter as Cavalier Country Club. Hotel owner Sidney Banks — no relation to the course architect of the same surname — played a significant part in expanding the club, its amenities and the surrounding neighborhood.
