The Federal Club in Glen Allen, Virginia, opens with a demanding hole that bends gently to the left, with fairway bunkers guarding both sides of the landing area. The approach plays uphill to a plateau green fronted by a bunker, where a false front on the left side punishes short misses and leaves the right as the safer bail-out. The second is a straight par three whose difficulty shifts considerably with the hole location; a deep bunker sits to the right of the green, making back-right pins particularly testing.
The third plays from a tee set in a narrow stand of hardwoods, giving the drive a chute-like feel. Three fairway bunkers and a marshy wetland area protect the landing zone, and the green is ringed by sand while sloping down through the middle, gathering approach shots toward its center.
