About Robert Trent Jones Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is a private club set along the shores of Lake Manassas in Gainesville, Virginia. The land was acquired by the City of Manassas in the late 1960s, when a dam was built on Broad Run to create a drinking water reservoir. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. first spotted the site from the air while surveying another property and was struck by its scenery, later writing to the landowner about his enthusiasm for it.

Jones, often described as the father of modern golf course architecture, designed his own course architecture studies at Cornell University and worked on more than 450 courses during his career. He regarded this site as aesthetically ideal and considered the club his masterpiece, conceiving a championship course that would serve as a golf retreat in the Washington, D.C. area. Construction began in 1988 and the course opened in April 1991.

The club hosted the first four Presidents Cup matches played in the United States.
