Front Royal Golf Club dates to 1938 and is the second-oldest golf course in Virginia. Four of its holes sit directly along the Shenandoah River, a distinction unique among the state's courses.
The layout has nine holes but plays with 18 tee boxes, each differing in slope and design, so a full round takes on the character of an 18-hole course. It was modeled on the county courses of Ireland and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Roosevelt administration, on land donated by William E. Carson in memory of his late son, Will. Carson designed the course himself, and the holes still largely follow his original routing.
