Starr Hollow Golf Club
About Starr Hollow Golf Club
Starr Hollow Golf Club sits on former ranch land near Tolar, in a setting tied to Texas folklore. Local history and long-standing legend connect the property to Belle Starr, the "Bandit Queen of the Wild West," who is said to have used the area as a hideout; the belief that she may be buried somewhere on the land has become part of the place's identity.
The original owner, Leonard, built a lake, a private golf course and a rustic clubhouse in the middle of the ranch, favoring space, privacy and an unhurried pace of play over grandeur. The clubhouse looked out over a large green planted and shaped in the outline of the state of Texas.

The course reflects architect Joe Finger's approach to working with the natural environment rather than against it, with attention to drainage and efficient irrigation well before such thinking was common. The layout follows the existing terrain and manages water naturally, giving it the feel of a course settled into its landscape.
