About Dallas Athletic Club
Dallas Athletic Club traces its origins to 1919, when a group led by T.L. Monagan and W.E. Greiner put forward a proposal for an athletic club in downtown Dallas. Monagan had moved to Dallas from St. Louis to work for the railroad before shifting into the fire insurance business, and was sent to San Francisco as an adjuster after the 1906 earthquake. A civic leader and keen sportsman, he was a charter member of the first Dallas Golf Club, helped organize the Dallas Athletic Club, had a hand in founding the Texas Baseball League, and played catcher for amateur teams.

The club engaged the architectural firm Lang & Witchell in 1922, allowing three months for approved blueprints and 30 days for bids on the items the club had ordered. The resulting building was completed at a cost of $2.2 million.
