About Brookings Country Club
Brookings Country Club traces its origins to the years before 1920, when a group of local men — among them Horace and Van Fishback, Elmer Sexauer and Earl Bartling — laid out a rough nine holes by mowing the pasture behind the Fishback barn and sinking tomato cans for cups.
In 1921 the group leased 50 acres from A.J. Kendall, under an agreement requiring the grounds to be kept neat and orderly, the adjoining sidewalks cleared, and barring alcohol and gambling on the property.

With no funds to hire a golf architect, Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz designed the course themselves. Early playing surfaces were built from sand and oil rather than turf, as recalled in a 1960 letter to the club from Ed Betty, who helped construct them. The club began with roughly 30 members.
