About Dataw Island Country Clubhouse

Dataw Island sits among South Carolina's Sea Islands, a stretch of coast contested by Spain and England for more than two centuries before the Revolutionary War. During the Plantation Era, fortunes built on indigo and Sea Island cotton supported large estates across these islands, an era that closed with the Civil War. For the century that followed, Dataw served first as a hunting preserve and later as farmland.

The island's name derives from Datha Island, drawn from a Muskogean word meaning "green wood," and connected to accounts of Datha, a chief of the Duhare people described by Francisco de Chicora after his capture by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s. When the present residential community was developed, considerable care was taken to recover and preserve artifacts from the site, some dated to roughly 6,000 years ago.
