Oldfield Golf Clubhouse

Oldfield occupies a stretch of low-country land along the Okatie River in South Carolina, where tidal marsh, forest and moss-draped live oaks meet water historically rich in fish, wildlife and waterfowl.

The property's documented history reaches back to 1732, when the Lord Proprietor granted a parcel known as "Old Field" to Governor Robert Johnson. By 1752 the land had passed to Gabriel Manigault, and later to Col. William Hazzard, a planter and colonial militia officer. After Edward Wigg, a storekeeper from Port Royal Island, married into the family, the place became known for many years as Wigg's Bluff. British troops destroyed the plantation in 1781; family tradition holds that it was rebuilt, only to be shelled from the river by Union gunboats in November 1862. Ownership remained unsettled through Reconstruction and much of the 20th century, with the land eventually held by Pauline Pratt Webel.
