About Wellman Golf Club
Wellman Golf Club sits in Johnsonville, in lower Florence County, South Carolina. The 18-hole layout runs over rolling terrain, with greens and fairways that make for challenging yet approachable play for a range of skill levels.
The course operated for more than forty years, serving both members and public play, before closing in 2010 after its owner filed for bankruptcy protection. Florence County bought the property in 2020, and in 2021 entered a 50-year ground lease with the City of Johnsonville, which took on construction and operation of the course as a public facility. Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson worked with the city to restore and rework the original layout into an 18-hole championship course intended to host tournaments as well as everyday rounds by local golfers and visitors.
