About Country Club of Charleston
Golf in Charleston traces back to 1739, when a shipment of clubs arrived from Scotland, and in 1786 a "Golf Club" was formed in the city — just 32 years after the founding of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. Scottish merchants of the Charlestown Golfing Society gathered on Harleston Green to play the game.
The Country Club of Charleston's forerunners came together in 1900 along the Cooper River, moving downriver to Belvidere Plantation a year later. In 1922 the club settled on its present site, 900 acres of the McLeod Plantation on the Ashley River. Land planning was handled by the Olmsted Bros. landscape firm, which recommended architect Seth Raynor for the course. Raynor went on to finish nearby Yeaman's Hall in 1925, and his wider body of work includes Fishers Island, Yale, Camargo, Sleepy Hollow and Monterey Peninsula.
