About Sweetwater Country Club
Sweetwater Country Club traces its origins to 1933, when C. G. Fuller and Senator Edgar Brown selected the property, which Fuller purchased and donated to Barnwell County for use as a nine-hole public golf course. The Sweetwater name comes from the taste of the springs that fed the site, where the course's ponds now sit.
The layout and the clubhouse were designed by A. Kemp of Belgium and built with WPA labor. A swimming pool, pro shop and bathhouse followed in 1954–1955, financed by the membership itself. In 1958 the original common Bermuda greens were replaced with hybrid 328 Bermuda, and in 1974 the members approved a program to remodel the clubhouse and pro shop and add a ballroom.
